Spoilers through volume 31.
It occurs to me that staying up all night on my overnight flight to London because something horrible might happen if I fell asleep would be the perfect time to write fanfic about Gaara.
(For those of you who joined recently, it's not sleep per se that's the problem, but sitting in an uncomfortable position for eleven hours without getting up every hour and walking around. The last time I did that, and for a much shorter length of time, my old back injury ruined my entire three-week trip to Japan by causing me intense pain and making the muscles around my shoulder seize up so badly that I could barely move my left arm.)
So anyway, I was hoping you all might refresh my memory on a few points so I don't have to page back through fifteen volumes of manga.
Does Gaara literally not sleep, at all, ever, (except when he's doing his instant sleep jutsu), or can he doze a bit but not sleep deeply?
If he doesn't sleep at all, does it ever say if he's physically capable of that because he's the vessel of Shukaku, or because he or someone put a no-sleep jutsu on him, or what?
I assumed the circles around his eyes were because of not sleeping for years, but somewhere I came across someone suggesting that it was the mark of Shukaku, like Naruto's whisker-marks. Is there any canon on that?

And you asked elsewhere about what's up with Shukaku now: Gaara no longer is possessed by Shukakau; Akatsuki took Shukaku and they're planning to use its power somehow, by, I dunno, keeping it in a jar as a battery or something. They're not letting run it around loose, though. It's reportedly been said somewhere (an interview? you fail me, Google) that Gaara can still use sand attacks now, but there's no indication yet about how powerful he is and how far his abiilities extend and whether or not he's still protected by the invisible sand-shield. (Since he's been invulnerable his whole life, will he have had any training in hand-to-hand and/or defensive combat at all?)
And his favorite foods are gizzard and salted tongue. WTF, Gaara. And he does not like sweet bean jelly, which means our love can never be.

His sad twisted lonely childhood left permanent scars, obviously.
And he does not like sweet bean jelly, which means our love can never be.
Because no one was there to feed him yokan as a child. It's so saaaaaad.
Must restrain self from writing fic where Naruto takes him to the ramen bar...
